MACE History

This is a compilation of some of the significant events in the history of the Missouri Association of Code Enforcement. This page is a work in progress. If you have anything to contribute (particularly between 2000 and 2007), please send it to macemembership@gmail.com. MANY hours went into researching old newsletters and conference programs, among other things, in an effort to get accurate events and the dates they occurred. Please keep this in mind if you're making a submission for this page.

  2009

Spring: Our official website, mace-mo.org goes live.

March 25-27: The 17th Annual MACE Business and Educational Conference is held at the University Plaza Hotel & Convention Center in Springfield, MO.

RIGHT: This revised logo appeared in March of 2009. With MACE having a website for the first time and more people viewing the logo on a high definition computer monitor, the royal blue and cardinal red of the 1996 logo looked "washed out" when viewed on a monitor's bright screen as compared to older printed versions. So for 2009, the reds and blues were darkened to give a richer appearance. The trees are a darker green and the land, which appeared somewhat olive greenish-brown on the 1996 logo, is now brown. The corner of the state where the trees appear on the logo has also been cleaned up so the blue border no longer appears behind the tree limbs.

2008

March: MACE officially becomes a chapter of the International Code Council (ICC).

March 26-28: The 16th Annual MACE Business and Educational Conference is held at the Stoney Creek Inn in St. Joseph, MO.

December: MACE moves closer to becoming an ICC Chapter as Board members meet with an ICC Chapter Representative.

November 3-5: The American Association of Code Enforcement (AACE) brings their Annual Business and Educational Conference to Missouri for the second time when their 10th Annual event is held at the Sheraton Westport Chalet in Maryland Heights, MO. It was the last conference of the century, and the theme was "Gateway To The New Millennium".

RIGHT: This logo made it's debut in the fall of 1996. The houses are gone and replaced with water. The "MACE" lettering is also bolder. This is the first MACE logo with the primary colors being "Cardinal red" and "Royal blue", representing both ends of the state.

1995

March 23-24: The Third Annual MACE Business and Educational Conference is held at the Lodge of the Four Seasons in Lake Ozark, MO.

RIGHT: The second MACE logo featured the "trees, land, water" graphics from the AACE logo but without the water and with added buildings, prompting then First Vice President Jim Poelker to ask, "Why are there houses floating in the water?". They were eventually dropped. Scroll down the page for the next version.

November 3-6: The American Association of Code Enforcement held their Annual Business and Educational Conference in Missouri. Downtown Kansas City played host to 175 Code Enforcement professionals from around the country.

  1992

Spring: In the spring of 1992, a group met in Kansas to discuss forming a state association there and David Park attended that meeting to gather additional ideas to help in forming a Missouri association.

June 4: A group of 35 code enforcement officials met at the Holiday Inn Executive Center in Columbia and MACE was formed by a unanimous vote. The first officers of MACE, who were elected at the June 4, 1992 meeting were David Park, President; R.C. Bonds, 1st Vice President; Dave Peterman, 2nd Vice President; Robert Gillis, 3rd Vice President; Martha Banton, Secretary; Dan Powell, Treasurer and Jim Poelker, Sergeant-At-Arms. Bonds, Gillis and Poelker would later serve as President. After establishing MACE, preparations began for the first Annual Conference.

  1991

At the 1991 AACE Annual Conference in Orlando, Florida, Dave and Laurie attended a session on how to form a state association and obtained materials to aid the effort in Missouri. They also met with some individuals from Kansas, who were interested in forming a state association there, including Hadley Stranghoner, Jr., who would later serve as AACE President and who was a great friend and help to MACE in our organizing efforts.

1990

October: David Park of Kansas City and Laurie Brown of Liberty attended the American Association of Code Enforcement's annual conference in Dallas. Although they worked for municipalities within a few miles of each other, Dave and Laurie first met at the Dallas conference. They spoke with code enforcement officials from states that had state associations and heard about their benefits. They talked about how nice it would be to have an organization in Missouri for code enforcement officials to network and participate in training activities.
